What changes the price
If one quote is far cheaper than another, it is usually one of these — not somebody being generous.
- Battery group size and type. A standard flooded battery and an AGM battery for a start-stop vehicle are not close in price, and fitting the wrong one shortens its life badly.
- Where the part lives. Some alternators come out in twenty minutes. Others sit behind an engine mount or under the intake. Some starters are on top and obvious; others require going in from underneath.
- Whether registration is needed. Many European vehicles and a growing number of others require the new battery to be registered to the charging system with a scan tool, or it will be overcharged and fail early.

Why Wisconsin winters expose a weak battery
Cold does two things at once, and the combination is what finishes off a battery that was fine in October.
First, low temperatures slow the chemical reaction inside the battery, so it delivers meaningfully less cranking power than it would in summer. Second, cold oil is thicker, so the starter has to work considerably harder to turn the engine over. Your battery gets weaker at exactly the moment more is demanded of it.
That is why so many batteries die on the first genuinely cold morning of the year. The battery did not fail that night — it had been marginal for months and the weather simply revealed it.
Telling the three apart
Battery. Slow, laboured cranking, or a rapid clicking. Dash lights dim. It might start after a jump and then be dead again the next morning.
Alternator. The car starts fine off a jump, then dies while driving. Battery warning light on. Headlights dim at idle and brighten when you rev. This is the one people replace batteries for by mistake.
Starter. One loud single click, or nothing at all, but the dash lights and headlights are strong. The battery has plenty of power — it is just not getting turned into engine rotation.
These overlap enough that guessing is genuinely unreliable. Testing takes minutes.

How long should a car battery last in Wisconsin?

Is it the battery or the alternator?
