What changes the price
If one quote is far cheaper than another, it is usually one of these — not somebody being generous.
- What actually failed. A dead battery and a failed fuel pump are not the same job or the same bill.
- Where the car is. A driveway is straightforward. A roadside shoulder on a busy road may not be safe to work on, and in that case the honest answer is a tow to somewhere we can.

Turn the key and listen. What happens next narrows it down fast, and it helps us bring the right part first time.
Rapid clicking, lights dim. Almost always the battery, or a badly corroded terminal. Very often a same-visit fix.
One single loud click, lights stay bright. Points at the starter, or the heavy cable feeding it. The battery has power — it is not being converted into rotation.
Nothing at all, no lights, no click. A dead battery, a failed main connection, an ignition switch, or a security system refusing to authorise the start.
It cranks strongly but never fires. The engine is turning but not getting fuel, spark or timing. Fuel pump, crank sensor, ignition or, occasionally, a timing belt that has let go.
It starts then immediately dies. Often an idle control, fuel delivery or immobiliser fault.

When a tow really is the right answer
We would rather tell you this on the phone than take your money to find out. Call a tow if the engine turned over with a loud knock or bang and then stopped, if there is a large fluid pool under the car, if it overheated badly before dying, or if it is sitting somewhere genuinely unsafe to work — a live traffic lane, a blind bend, or an icy slope.
