How to read a repair estimate
Almost every legitimate estimate is built from three things: parts, labour hours multiplied by an hourly rate, and shop supplies or fees. If you cannot see those separated out, ask for them separated out. A single lump sum with no breakdown is not something you should be asked to approve.
Labour is usually billed from a standard guide rather than a stopwatch, so a job listed as 2.4 hours bills at 2.4 hours whether it took two or three. That is normal and not a scam. Everything is urgent. A genuine estimate separates safety-critical from advisable from optional. If every line is red, that is a sales tactic.
Parts replaced in sets when one failed. Four ignition coils because one cylinder misfires. Both front axles because one boot is torn.
Diagnosis by parts. A quote that lists three possible causes and proposes replacing all three.
No old parts offered. Any honest shop will give you the parts they removed. It is the simplest possible proof the work happened.
Pressure to decide now. Genuine safety issues do exist and we will tell you plainly when you have one. But a real problem is still real tomorrow morning.
When we tell you the quote was fair
