What changes the price
If one quote is far cheaper than another, it is usually one of these — not somebody being generous.
- Whether the fault is present when we arrive. An intermittent fault is genuinely harder and sometimes needs the car monitored over a period.
- How many systems are involved. One stored code on one circuit is quick. Six codes across three modules usually means one underlying cause and takes longer to isolate.
- Whether wiring is involved. Rodent damage and salt corrosion are both common here, and chasing a broken wire takes as long as it takes.

Why the free code read is not a diagnosis
A parts store will read your codes for nothing, and it is a genuinely useful first step. The problem is what people do with the answer.
Take P0420, one of the most common codes there is. It reads as catalyst system efficiency below threshold, and the obvious conclusion is that you need a catalytic converter — one of the most expensive parts on the car. But that code is triggered by a comparison between two oxygen sensors. A lazy rear sensor, an exhaust leak upstream, or an engine running rich for an unrelated reason will all produce it with a perfectly good converter.
Buying the part the code appears to name is how people spend a large sum and still have the light on a week later. The code tells you which system reported a problem. Testing tells you which component caused it.
Steady light, flashing light, and what to do
Steady light, car drives normally. Not an emergency. Get it read in the next week or two. Ignoring it for months tends to mean a small fault quietly damaging something larger.
Steady light with a symptom — rough running, poor economy, hesitation. Get it looked at promptly.
Flashing light. Stop driving hard. This means an active misfire is putting raw fuel into your catalytic converter and destroying it in real time. Keep revs low, get somewhere safe, and call.
Light on with the temperature gauge climbing or oil pressure warning. Pull over and switch off. That combination is engine damage in progress.

Do you charge for a diagnosis?
Yes, and the fee is credited against the repair if you have us do the work. Diagnosis is skilled time with proper equipment — anybody offering it entirely free is either doing a code read and calling it a diagnosis, or recovering the cost inside the repair price.
Can I just clear the code and see if it comes back?
You can, and occasionally that is reasonable after a loose fuel cap. But clearing codes also erases the freeze frame data that makes diagnosis quicker, and it resets emissions readiness monitors. If the fault is real the light will return, usually within a few drive cycles.
Will a check engine light fail an emissions test?
An illuminated check engine light is generally an automatic fail wherever testing applies, and clearing the code right before a test causes a fail too, because the readiness monitors have not completed. The vehicle needs to be driven a normal cycle after a repair before it will pass.
