Water Pump, Thermostat & Hose Repair in Madison, WI
Overheating is the fault most likely to turn a moderate bill into a catastrophic one if you keep driving. A thermostat is cheap. A head gasket is not.
- Price quoted before we startNo teardown surprises, no line items you didn’t approve.
- Old parts left with youThe simplest proof the work you paid for actually happened.
- 12-month written warrantyParts and labour, printed on the invoice, not promised verbally.
- No trip chargeYou pay for the repair, not for the drive out to you.
How much does cooling system repair cost in Madison?
Cooling work is priced by how deep in the engine the failed part sits. A hose is accessible. A water pump driven by the timing belt is a much bigger job, because the timing belt has to come off to reach it.
What decides the price
- Which component failed. A thermostat, a hose, a water pump and a radiator are four very different jobs. We pressure-test first so you’re not replacing parts on a guess.
- How the water pump is driven. This is the big one. An accessory-belt water pump is a straightforward job. A timing-belt-driven pump means removing the timing cover, and the sensible move is replacing the belt at the same time since it’s already out.
- Salt corrosion. Hose clamps, fittings and housing bolts seize in the salt belt. A ten-minute hose swap becomes an hour when a fitting shears. We factor that in rather than surprising you with it.
- Whether the system needs flushing. If the coolant is contaminated or the wrong type has been mixed in, a flush goes with the repair.
We don’t publish fixed prices because the honest number depends on your vehicle and what we find. What you get instead is a flat quote before we’re dispatched — call or text 608-218-4461 with your year, make and model and you’ll have a real number in minutes, not a range. Nothing gets added to the invoice that you haven’t agreed to first.

What changes the price
If one quote is far cheaper than another, it is usually one of these — not somebody being generous.
- Where the water pump is driven from. An accessory-belt pump is a straightforward job. A timing-belt-driven pump means removing the timing belt, and at that point the belt should be replaced too. That is why one water pump quote can be several times another.
- Whether the engine has already been overheated. If it has been run hot, there may be damage beyond the part that failed. We will tell you honestly before you spend money on a repair that will not save the engine.
- Coolant type. Modern vehicles use specific formulations that are not interchangeable. Mixing them causes gelling and blockages.
What our price includes
- Pressure test to locate the leak rather than guessing at it
- Correct coolant to manufacturer specification
- System bled properly — trapped air causes overheating even after a correct repair
- New gaskets and seals on anything we open
- Running temperature verified before we leave
Time on site: Thermostat or hose 1 to 2 hours. Water pump 2 to 5 hours.
Overheating: what to do in the moment
If the temperature gauge climbs into the red or you see steam, the correct sequence is: switch off the air conditioning, turn the heater to full hot and the fan to maximum — this genuinely pulls heat out of the engine — and get somewhere safe to stop. Then switch the engine off.
Do not open the coolant cap on a hot engine. The system is pressurised and the coolant is above its normal boiling point; releasing that pressure can put scalding fluid over you. Wait until it is cool to the touch.
Then call rather than driving on. The distinction that matters is that continuing to drive an overheating engine is what turns a failed thermostat into a warped cylinder head.
Small leaks are worth fixing early
Cooling systems rarely fail suddenly. There is usually a weeping hose, a slightly crusty residue around a pump, a sweet smell after a drive, or a coolant level that needs topping every few weeks.
Each of those is cheap to fix at that stage and expensive to ignore, because the failure mode is not a gradual loss of performance — it is a sudden loss of coolant, usually at the least convenient moment, followed by heat damage that happens in minutes. If you are topping up coolant regularly, something is leaking and it is worth finding now.
Signs you need cooling system repair
Any one of these is worth a phone call. It costs nothing to describe it and find out.
- Temperature gauge reading higher than normal or climbing
- A sweet syrupy smell after driving
- Coloured puddles under the car — green, orange or pink
- Coolant level that needs topping up regularly
- The heater blowing cold when the engine is warm
- Steam or a hot smell from under the bonnet
Cooling System Repair FAQ
Can I keep driving if it’s only slightly overheating?
We would strongly advise against it. Overheating damage is not gradual — a head gasket can go in a few minutes of running hot. The repair you are avoiding is almost always far cheaper than the one you will cause.
Why does my heater blow cold when the engine is hot?
It usually means coolant is not circulating properly, which points at a low level, a stuck thermostat, air trapped in the system or a failing water pump. The heater core relies on hot coolant flowing through it, so a cold heater with a hot engine is a genuine warning sign.
Can you do a water pump at my house?
Accessory-belt-driven pumps, yes, routinely. Timing-belt-driven pumps depend on the vehicle and the space available — it is a much longer job and sometimes belongs in a shop. We will look at your specific engine and tell you honestly which it is.
